Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
