European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
