The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
