Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
